Illinois, stretching from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River, embraces vast, rich farmlands, the giant city of Chicago, rolling glacial plains and, to the south, the hills and valleys of the Illinois Ozarks.

Illinois boasts 6,900km or 4,300 miles of scenic shoreline, 1,100 historic sites and half a million acres of state parks. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th US president, spent most of his professional life here, as he was a lawyer and political figure here.

Nicknamed the Windy City, Chicago is one of the worlds giant trade, industry and transportation centres and the birthplace of the skyscraper.

In contrast, its Lake Michigan shoreline is dotted with sandy beaches, hundred of parks, harbours, zoos and vast expanses of forest reserve. It is one of the USAs largest cities and the hub of the Midwest.

The inhabitants in the Chicago land area speak more than 50 languages, making it the most ethnically diverse city in the USA. For visitors to the USA, it is the gateway to the farmlands and cities of Illinois and Indiana, and the recreation areas of Wisconsin.

Constituent state of the United States of America. It encompasses 56,345 square miles and stretches 385 miles from Wisconsin in the north to Cairo in the area that is known as Little Egypt, which lies farther south than Richmond.

In addition to Wisconsin, the state borders Lake Michigan on the northeast, Indiana on the east, Kentucky on the southeast, and Missouri and Iowa on the west. Illinois was named for the Illinois Indians. The capital is Springfield.

Admitted as the 21st member of the Union on Dec. 3, 1818, Illinois has throughout the 20th century been profoundly divided. It lies within both the so called old industrial belt and the fertile agricultural heart of the nation.

The presence of Chicago, the nations third largest city, creates sharp distinctions between the states largely urban northeast and the more evenly balanced urban rural population downstate. Because of its great length, Illinois exhibits both Northern and Southern regional characteristics. Still further contrasts derive from the racial and ethnic complexity of the population.

These internal divisions, while not unique to Illinois, perhaps became magnified through the states critical role in the economic and political life of the nation. Rich in coal and oil reserves and ideally located for the acquisition of raw materials and distribution of finished goods, Illinois ranks among the top states in value of exports, agricultural income, and value added by manufacturing.

Chicago is a railroad hub of the nation, its O Hare International Airport is among the worlds busiest, and Illinois highways and waterways are thick with commercial traffic. Politically, Illinois has continued to be a swing state, its votes often mirroring fluctuating social tensions that underlie the growing, but unevenly distributed, economic

Northwest Passage [VHS]

One is compelled to say, in these Politically Correct times, that Northwest Passage takes a distinctly “unenlightened” view of the 18th-century American colonists’ Indian neighbors. Then again, everything about the world portrayed in this early-Technicolor production is harsh: the repressive policies of the Crown-backed Boston magistrates, the expectations Maj. Robert Rogers (Spencer Tracy) has fo…

Take a globe, spin it, and stop it with your finger while trying to hit the Northern hemisphere. What is your finger pointing at? The chances are it’s probably Siberia or some other part of Russia. That’s not surprising – the Russian Federation is the biggest country in the world! It occupies the territory of more than 17 square kilometers.

As you already learned, Russia is located in the Northern hemisphere in the Eastern part of Europe and Northern part of Asia. If you ever decide to cross it from East to West on foot, (Baltiisk is 9 thousand kilometers away from Welen) you would have to walk for 10 months. Just imagine it – walking for 300 days! However, if you aren’t planning anything like this yet, read on – I will tell you everything you need to know.

Russia is a perfect country for those who often get tired of the weather in their own city. Hot? Why not go to the Russian islands in the Arctic Ocean. It rarely gets warm there because they, just like the main part of the country, lie in the artic and sub arctic climatic zones. You will be able to touch the permafrost, hear to the snow screeching under your feet, or ride a sleigh pulled by deer. Are you cold already? Head on to the South-West. If you’re not in too much of a hurry, we can go through all of the climatic zones – from the coldest to the hottest ones. Take your time! See the endless green cover of taiga, walk along the Ural Mountains into the deciduous woods, inhale the spicy smell of steppe herbs, and let the sand of Caspian desert get into your shoes. Now it’s time to check out the Caucasus Mountains – our last trek. You’ll see the waves slamming the cliffs, dolphins jumping out of the water, shrieks of sea-gulls, oe the gentle quaver of palm leaves – welcome into the subtropics of the Black Sea!

Everything stated above is in Russia. It’s big. It’s no wonder that the sun rises in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy when it’s already the middle of the working day in Moscow. There are 11 time zones in Russia! The gap between Moscow time and Greenwich Mean Time is +3 hours, between Moscow and Kamchatka is +9 hours.

The western part of Russia – the Kaliningrad district – is a very special one. It’s totally detached from the rest of the state’s territory. To get there from Russia, a person would have to cross 2 foreign countries! This district was established in 1945 after the Potsdam Conference of three military allies – USSR, USA and Great Britain. The leaders of these countries agreed to liquidate the state of Western Prussia whose northern part was given to the USSR after World War II. Kaliningrad had been called K?nigsberg until the Russians came. Frankly speaking, Russian history is looming with really interesting and mysterious events!

It’s hard to say just how old Russia is. There’s only one thing we know for sure – Moscow has just turned 850! Nine centuries were enough to let Russian history and art penetrate the world culture. Some historical sites located on the territory of the Russian Federation are included into the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage. These are the Moscow Kremlin, Red Square, the historical center of Saint-Petersburg, the unique wooden architectural monuments of Kizhi, the historic and cultural complex of Solovetskie islands, the monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal lands made of snow-white stone, and a lot of other grandiose architectural complexes.

A lot of great people were born in Russia – but I won’t fill your head with endless names of famous scientists, inventors, writers, etc. Let’s take a quick look at Hollywood instead – many American movie stars have Russian roots. Leonardo DiCaprio’s grandmother was Russian – just like the ancestors of Sylvester Stallone, David Duchovny, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford and Stephen Spielberg. Besides, the founders of Metro Goldwyn Mayer spent their whole childhood in Russia.

Carol Reed (The Third Man) directed this 1965 portrait of the relationship between Michelangelo (Charlton Heston) and Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison), who commissioned the artist to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
