Babylon, Guy

As the oldest of all holidays, New Year, is a time of rebirth, which has its origin in ancient Babylon, nearly 4000 years ago. It was originally thought to have been celebrated on March 15th. Julius Caesar made January 1st as New Year’s day, in 46. B.C.

New Year Resolution

The original favourite New Year resolution was to return borrowed farm tools, in ancient Babylon.

Still every year thousands of people around the world, say goodbye to the old year and promise themselves a new beginning with New Year resolutions. Yet these resolutions are the most breakable promises in the world, for come January 15th, most have been forgotten.

Fear and custom is the source of many of the traditions that surround the celebration. Perhaps none more strange than the source of gathering with your friends and family at midnight. It was believed that what you did on the first day of the year set the pattern for the whole year. Gathering together with those you loved in the first few moments of the New Year, was thus very important.

United States of America:

In Times Square, New York, thousands come together to watch a ball do a one-minute descent, heralding in midnight. The first iron and wood ball was dropped in 1907. The current Waterford Crystal ball, with a six foot diameter, weighs 1,070 pounds. There are many people who would like to know what the crystal ball ushers in this year, for a world in deep financial trouble. The word is that fortune telling is one business that is on the rise.

Auld Lang Syne

Throughout every English speaking country in the world, the New Year is ushered in with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. A song that is renown for containing the most forgettable lyrics in the world. Lyrics which very few people would even understand. Here are the lyrics for you to have fun with New Year’s eve:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne.

CHORUS:

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We’ll tak a cup of kindness yet,

For auld lang syne!

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp,

And surely I’ll be mine,

And we’ll tak a cup o kindness yet,

For auld lang syne!

We twa hae run about the braes,

And pou’d the gowans fine,

But we’ve wander’d monie a weary fit,

Sin auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,

Frae morning sun till dine,

But seas between us braid hae roar’d

Sin auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty fiere,

And gie’s a hand o thine,

And we’ll tak a right guid-willie waught,

For auld lang syne.

Although not written by him, Robert Burns first published the song 1796. He had learned the song from an old Scottish man.

Made popular by Guy Lombardo, it was played at the Warldorf Astoria, New York, every New Year’s eve from 1930 to 1976. This included the years of the Second World War.

Greek Traditions:

In Greece the symbol of a baby is still used on New Year banners. It was meant to symbolize the annual rebirth.

Japanese Tradition:

New Year is a time when all misunderstandings and quarrels are forgiven. This was represented by the forget-the-year party, as well as sending New Year cards.

Netherlands Traditions:

The Netherlands lit up the New Year and purged the old, with bonfires.

Chinese Traditions:

China, being the home of fireworks, believes demons are chased away and good luck brought in. If you are wandering through China on Chinese New Year, (February) you will not be able to tell the difference between gun fire and fireworks that continuously go off around you. A second Chinese tradition is to throw out your old furniture and buy new. Of course you leave your old furniture on the pavement, for others to pick up for free. What is old to you, is new to someone else.

Spanish Traditions:

In Spain you will get to eat twelve grapes. One for each good month in the coming year.

English Traditions:

An old English tradition is to make sure you eat a piece of Christmas cake for 12 different cakes, so as to ensure a year’s prosperity. Perhaps that was the Queen’s problem when she had her “Annus horribilus”. She didn’t get a slice from enough different cakes.

So we have only touched just one or two of New Year traditions. You can check out this really great site for traditions, world wide.

Harrison, Joseph

As a publicist I get asked by clients and authors about going to the National Publicity Summit in New York.  I’ve attended almost every Summit since Steve Harrison started it and go once or twice a year to create new media relationships, maintain old ones and of course, to pitch my clients to the media.  Through the Summit, I’ve gotten clients booked on Fox News, PBS, CNBC, MSNBC and a number of national magazines.

I represent a lot of authors. Here’s the problem: authors have to do most of the promotion of their books if they want them to sell.  Even if you’ve been picked up by one of the big publishing houses, they only do so much to get you media attention.  This is the reality.

So, let’s say you decide to get media attention yourself.  You plan your trip to New York City, where most of the big media are headquartered. You roll into Manhattan with your strategy all laid out: ‘First, I’m going to try to meet with the producer of Good Morning America, and then I’m going to Fox News, and then I’m going to see the guy at Reuters. After lunch, I’m going to try to talk to the Today Show and then I’m going to stop by and see if I can talk to the producer of 60 Minutes.’

Forget about it.  It’s not going to happen.

Reason #1 why I recommend the Summit for many people is access, one-on-one, to these media gatekeepers in a very efficient and organized event.  But is it for every author?  Depending on your situation, it may or may not make sense to go.  I’d recommend it if you have a consumer-oriented, non-fiction topic.  Does it have broad audience appeal?  Can your book help the average person in their day-to-day lives?  If so, then it makes sense for you to consider attending.

If you have a highly technical topic such as how computers work, or one about a historical event such as WWII, it probably doesn’t make sense to go to the Publicity Summit, unless you can connect your book to current trends.  (In fact, the Summit staff will probably turn down your application if they feel that the media would not be interested in the topic.)   Generally, fiction, poetry and books about localized topics will not do well at the Summit.  For example, a book about the best bars in Chicago would probably not be of interest to the national media who attend the Summit.

Should you go if you feel you’re not ready to meet the media?  Here’s the dirty little secret: no-one feels ready.  Don’t worry about that. If you’re an expert with a decent topic with a unique angle, the Summit can work for you.  Go there to build relationships, yes, but also go to get feedback from the news industry professionals.  I’ve seen people before the Summit starts coming in thinking they’re heading in one direction, then after having interacted with 100 journalists and producers, leaving with all new information or direction: a better book title, the perfect pitch, new business ventures and relationships.

I’m such a fan of Steve Harrison and his National Publicity Summit that I am now an affiliate for the Summit.  If you are interested in attending please check out this link: http://www.nationalpublicitysummit.com/?10373

This 1963 extravaganza, directed by Joseph L. In Firefly Lane, Kristin Hannah takes us deep inside a 30-year friendship between two unlikely cohorts-Kate Mularkey, high school nerd, and Tully Hart, glamorous new-girl. But the bond between the two is so strong that in the summer of 1974 they form a single unit: TullyandKate, BBF, best friends forever. And they are.

During college and later in their mid-twenties, the two are inseparable, both following the course set out for them by Tully-TV news stardom. Tully, in particular, is driven to fill an inner void carved out by her mother’s abandonment. Smart, talented, and beautiful Tully pursues her career with an intensity that pushes aside desire for husband and family. She craves approval and adulation, not love and commitment-except from Kate.

Kate eventually finds her own path, separate from that of Tully: first as writer and advertising exec, then as wife and mother. She, along with her own parents, creates the family that Tully returns to time and again as haven.

Any friendship, of course, is not without strain-and author Hannah explores those natural tensions between the two women. Everyone, men especially, is captivated by Tully’s beauty and powerful presence. Kate feels the lesser one, even within her own family. Her husband, daughter, and mother are all drawn in by Tully’s aura-a source, at times, of fear and resentment for Kate. Nor is Tully above appropriating Kate’s family for her own needs.

The plot’s conflict also reflects tension between career and family. Kate and Tully came of age during the first wave of feminism when those competing choices were front and center for women. What gives this book its immediacy-and poignancy-is that the issue has yet to be resolved. Witness Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who by her own admission feels an emptiness in her personal life-the result of sacrifices made in pursuit of a top-flight legal career. It’s hard not to notice that the same choice-family vs. career-has been required by few to none of her male peers.

If there’s a weakness in this book it’s that the writing is somewhat facile…and plot-driven. There isn’t enough devoted to the inner-lives of its characters. At times it reads like a screen-play in search of a film-crew…and it wouldn’t be surprising if, in fact, we someday see Firefly Lane, the Film. It’s a terrific story…and it made me want a little more from the two characters.
