To Kill A Mockingbird – 3 Stars (Good)

Gregory Peck won a Best Actor Oscar in this adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about white lawyer Atticus Finch defending an innocent African American man accused of raping a white woman.

This is a story that illuminates everything that is wrong about hate, prejudice, bigotry, ignorance, stupidity, lack of backbone and lack of a heart. It is a story about an all-white male jury who makes important life decisions without right thinking and right motives.

Finch (Gregory Peck) suffers retribution because of his defense of Tom Robinson (Brock Peters) who is accused of raping Mayella Violet Ewell (Collin Wilcox). The real villain is her father Bob Ewell (James Anderson) who beats her and tries to kill Finch’s daughter Scout (Mary Badham) and son Jem (Phillip Alford).

Scout narrates this story about her childhood memories. She and Jem team up with friend Dill Harris (John Megna) in a subplot involving “Boo” Radley (Robert Duvall) who ultimately saves Scout and Jem from Bob Ewell by killing Ewell with his own knife.

Sheriff Heck Tate (Frank Overton) would later claim that Ewell fell on his own knife. Tate knew that Ewell was two legs and bad news coming in the form of one bigoted human being; there would be no charges filed against Boo.

In the end, the innocent Tom Robinson is found guilty and shot to death when he tries to flee his injustice.

It is no irony that this 1932 story takes place in Macon County, Georgia, a cesspool of racially motivated hate even in 1962 when this film was released.

To Kill a Mockingbird shows that some people will never have any discernable personal growth in their entire life; thank God that others do.

Boo, a scary recluse who only came out at night, was Duvall’s first movie role. Duvall apparently stayed out of the sun for six weeks and dyed his hair blond in preparation for the role.

Dill was modeled after author Harper Lee’s childhood friend Truman Capote. Finch was the middle name of Harper Lee’s father.

Horton Foote, who wrote the screenplay for To Kill a Mockingbird, won an Oscar and the film also won for Best Art Direction for a black and white film. The film earned 5 other Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, won by Lawrence of Arabia with Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif.

Gregory Peck picked up the Golden Globe for Best Actor, and the film also won another for Promoting International Understanding. Peck has said that this film was his favorite work.

His character Atticus Finch was voted the top screen hero of the last 100 years by the American Film Institute. This is truly a no-spin honor. To Kill a Mockingbird is also ranked No. 2 on AFI’s 100 Most Inspiring Movies of All Time (It’s a Wonderful Life with James Stewart is No. 1).

The evidence of just how emotional To Kill a Mockingbird is comes from Brock Peters (the accused) who started to naturally cry while shooting the testifying scene. Gregory Peck said he had to look past him to keep from choking up himself.

Racial bigotry is an extremely emotional and hateful occurrence that continues to linger with us today. Were it not for a loving God who is color blind, the hurt would be even deeper and more destructive.

To Kill a Mockingbird is as appropriate today as it was when it was released. Each generation must work to progress past the sins of past generations. Tom Robinson may rest in peace knowing his descendants will then have a better system of justice.

Micro stock seems to be taking over the world of stock. Not just in still photography either. In the last year more video content has been made available over You Tube than in the previous sixty years of material created by the big three television channels. Now it seems as if every stock agency is announcing new video collections. If you read the forums you’ll find out that a lot of the new “creators” of stock don’t even care that much about money! Many of them, and perhaps rightfully so, spurn the pressure associated with making money and would rather just enjoy seeing their images being used. Many more are quite content just earning enough to buy that new lens.

Many of those that see the potential of earnings are mobilizing to maximize that potential. Yuri Arcurs, for example, is a machine churning out literally more images than the Micro sites are willing to digest. I heard him say he puts out 600 selects a month…and that he could do more if the agencies would take them! The scary thing is that he does them so well!

Large producers and declining RPI

Most of the producers of Royalty Free photography, the larger producers who have made very high levels of income form their stock, have reacted to declining RPI (return per image) by ramping up their own production and streamlining their operations. It becomes a vicious cycle of over supply lowering prices and creating the need for said producers to create yet more images. Now they are eyeing Rights Managed images. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard big RF producers now saying that RM is the place to be. Oh boy, here we go again!

What’s a little stock producer like me to do?

The answer is to do what most of the others are not doing. The answer, or at least a big part of it, is to differentiate your self from the masses. Develop a new skill or vision, add a new dimension to your work, or find an entirely new market. Here are three examples of such strategies as seen in the first three photographers in the interview section of my web site.

In the case of Jack Hollingsworth, he has found a whole new direction. Jack is now helping other photographers deal with the new realities of the market place. He is utilizing his tremendous amount of experience and success in travel and stock photography to help others enter that market, and is also offering workshops for photographers to “re-invent” themselves for this new Internet age.

Marc Romanelli has successfully incorporated video into his stock photography business. He began that process a few years ago. Now that crowd-sourcing is entering this arena too, Marc is going to ramp up the quality of his video by moving to a higher end camera, such as a Red One or Scarlet, and shooting more RM video and less RF. I am taking a cue from Marc and have become dipping my toe into motion (though with an entry level Panasonic HVX-200). I now have my first clips up on Getty and they are selling well.

Colin Anderson already has a unique vision that sets him apart. He is further developing and enhancing this vision by learning 3D. He is incorporating 3D into his already formidable arsenal of Photoshop and photography skills. Colin, in a sense, is competing with few, if any, other photographers. His images are like those of nobody else!

Enjoy the challenge

The question to ask yourself is how can you differentiate yourself? I sincerely believe that to be successful at such an undertaking, you have to also enjoy the challenge of that new approach. I’m not ready to learn 3D, but I have enjoyed “playing” with motion. I have shot my motion in conjunction with others, teaming up with David Fischer, Shalom Ormsby, Drew Kelly and Sam Diephuis to produce footage. Find a way to differentiate yourself that you can approach enthusiastically and you will be on your way to securing your future in this incredibly exiting world of commercial visuals!

Harris, Vincent

Are you a fan of the Harry Potter movie series? If you said yes, then many of you must be fans of the other characters too.

It is not a new thing that people like the supporting characters too apart the protagonist. And the supporting characters of Harry Potter are really amazing. They have their own forte, powers and skills. And the fans not only like the positive supporting characters, but they also like the characters that are in the opposition of the Hero. Positive or negative whoever you like, but one thing is for sure that all the supporting characters of Harry Potter have their own identity. They play an important role in the plot of the story and this is the reason that people like them too.

In this article, we will discuss about the 5 Hay Potter characters whose actions figures are very popular –

1. Harry Potter – Obviously, this name has to be on the top. With millions as his fans worldwide, the character of this child magician has grown up in the last few years. Till now, the silver screen has witnessed six Harry Potter movies and all of them have been great hits through out the world. And surprisingly not only kids, but adults too watch his movies. Harry James is an orphan who learns that he is a wizard on his eleventh birthday. Then he goes to the ‘Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’ to learn magic. Harry Potter discovers that he is famous in the whole Wizarding world as his fate is tied with that of Lord Voldemort, the Dark wizard who killed the parents of Harry.

The Harry Potter action figure is among the hottest toys today.

2. Hermione Granger – Now, those who know Harry Potter they also know about this character for sure. Hermione is the girlfriend of our little magician. Hermione Jean Granger becomes close friends with Harry Potter and she uses her quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge to help him in situations. She is very clever and intelligent.

Initially, she has a tendency to panic in scary situations, but later she learns to be more instinctive, saving others lives at times with her quick thinking. Today, the Hermione Granger action figures are not much behind the Harry Potter figures in popularity.

3. Dumbledore – Next comes Dumbledore, the full name is ‘Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore’. This character plays an important role in the story of Harry Potter as he is the major protagonist. Dumbledore is the headmaster of the Wizarding Magic School – ‘Hogwarts of Witchcraft and Wizardry’. He is the founder and director of the ‘Order of the Phoenix’, an organization that fights the main antagonist Lord Voldemort.

You can find that the Dumbledore action figures are available in different series as they have released by the toy companies after the release of every Harry Potter movie.

4. Draco Malfoy – All Harry Potter fans much know about this character. Draco is an antagonist the Harry Potter series. He is a Slytherin student studying with Harry. This character is accompanied by Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, two dim-witted accomplices who mostly act as his bodyguards. Draco is often regarded as a cowardly bully that is known for using taunts and psychological manipulation for denigrating his victims. Draco reveals his ability to cunningly wield magic for achieve his objectives.

Draco likes to attack his enemies with psychological warfare. He often sues his elitist upbringing as his weapon to belittle the ones who are less prosperous like Ron Weasley.

The Harry Potter Draco action figures released after every Harry Potter movie resemble the original character. A large number of people collect these action figures and this proves that people like the negative characters too.

5. Hagrid – This cute fat looking character of Rubeus Hagrid is very popular among the Harry Potter fans. The interesting thing is that this character is addressed by his surname only. Hagrid is the keeper of Keys and Grounds. He is also the gamekeeper of the magic school. The character of Hagrid was introduced in the Harry Potter’s third year at the Hogwarts School. Later it is revealed that this character is also a member of the ‘Order of the Phoenix’. After his expulsion from the magic school, the Ministry breaks his oak wand and forbade him of magic. But, he keeps the broken pieces of his wand in an umbrella to perform small spells at times. The character of Hagrid will always be a bit inept because he is not a fully qualified wizard compared to the others. He may loose his major magical tricks, but he is still a hit in the action figure world as there are many different versions of Hagrid action figures available today in the market. .
