Even as a teenager I learned that, as a rule, the stuff which tasted great was bad for me, and the stuff which tasted like complete crap, was gonna do me the most good. What a ridiculous notion. What kinda weird-ass, nasty prank is that to play on a fat food-loving kid? So not fair. So not a lesson that I wanted to learn.

“Whaddaya mean, donuts don’t have the same nutritional value as vegetables? Let me see that research paper.”

As a somewhat resourceful (code for smart-ass) chubby thirteen year-old, I actually could have run workshops for the masses:

* Vegetable Evasion 101.

* 50 creative things to do with vegetables at the dinner table, other than eat them.

* How to create the ‘illusion’ of vegetable eating.

* Managing your fear of vegetables through cognitive disassociation.

* Developing your own vegetable allergy.

If the entire range of vegetables started and finished with potato, I would have been a vegetable-a-holic. I could, on occasion, stretch myself to carrots, but only to keep the Vegetable Police off my back momentarily. Peas were mushy crap, the asparagus smell was worse than my school bag (that’s saying something), brussel sprouts totally creeped me out, and I had re-occurring nightmares about broccoli; it reminded me of teeny, weeny trees. Didn’t look like food to me. Disgusting.

For the majority of my teenage years, my mother and I actually engaged in vegetable warfare.

Gotta say, in her thirties, she was quite the tactician. She needed to be; I could spot a hidden vegetable at thirty feet. Mothers do that you know; the vegetable ‘hiding’ thing. They’re trained in it by their mothers. And their mothers, mothers before them. We poor, simple men live in the dark when it comes to this stuff. I’ll write an article on that one day.

As I got older, she became more and more skilled and increasingly cunning. Not fair really, I was just a dumb kid. You grow up thinking that mothers are all ‘love and light’; they’re not. They are sneaky, resourceful, creative and extremely strategic adversaries. Sure, they look all cutesy and caring; it’s a complete scam. They are hard-core. They are simply vegetable pushers in frocks. Yep, many significant battles were fought at the Harper dinner table.

“I don’t care how long you sit there Mister, you’re not moving until you eat every last vegetable on that plate!”

“Cow” (in a feeble-under-my-breath whisper).

“What did you say to me?”

“Nothing.”

“I’ll give you some ‘cow’ around the ears in a minute, Mister backchat”

That’s another thing nobody tells you – Mothers having super-human hearing; it’s like some in-built, special survival mechanism, chick thing. It puts us kids at a biological disadvantage. What kinda lame-ass ‘level’ playing field is that? I wish I learned about the hearing trick earlier. Coulda saved myself a lot of heartache. It’s amazing how scary a tiny little woman, with cooking utensils can be.

Did I mention their unique propensity to bend the truth?

“Mum, does this have broccoli in it…?”

“Hmm, don’t think so..”

LIAR!

Your pants are SO on fire Mary Harper.

When it came to vegetables, she had absolutely no morals. She would lie, cheat and coerce those horrible things into my mouth. She would look at me with that innocent, ‘but-I’m-your-mother-why-would-I-mislead-you’ face and then proceed to lie her ass off. Even when I’d find the offending vegetable in my meal (hidden cleverly under the good stuff), she’d come out with “I don’t remember putting that in there!!”

No wonder I have trust issues.

It wasn’t until I hit my twenties, that I actually began to understand and appreciate the psychology and the motivation behind my mother’s sneaky little habits. And yes, I did reluctantly discover that broccoli is amazingly good for me. Even though it doesn’t come close to cheesecake, I consume it on a regular basis because it’s good for me. Now, if only someone could only create a cheesecake with the nutritional values and benefits of broccoli! Or conversely, maybe grow some broccoli that tastes like cheesecake. Now there’s a business idea.

I now use the ‘Broccoli Principle’ when I am working with people in the areas of personal and professional development. Even as adults, we are addicted to the ‘yummy’ stuff (metaphorically speaking). The stuff that’s easy, the stuff that ‘tastes’ good, the stuff that doesn’t challenge us, get us out of our comfort zone or cause us to become stronger and more capable. It’s also usually the stuff that doesn’t allow us to grow and be ‘healthy’ (psychologically, emotionally, developmentally). We ‘eat’ what we want, rather than what we need. We’re adults behaving like spoiled brats. And what we end up with, is stunted emotional growth and personal development scurvy. In order to ‘grow’ properly, develop our potential and create our own version of ‘amazing’, we need to eat the broccoli that life serves up.

Okay, I’m off to investigate that cheesecake flavoured broccoli thing…

The Walking Purchase of 1737 marked the end of negotiated boundaries in Pennsylvania, both geographical and cultural. This book sensitively reconstructs their world from the time Europea…

No basketball team amounts to much without the necessary guidance from the basketball coaching staff who supports, educates, trains and instructs the team. The Huskies are no exception. Coaching support for the Huskies includes head coach Jim Calhoun who is in his 23rd season with the Huskies. Associate head coach George Blaney is in his 8th season with the Huskies. Assistant coach Andre LaFleur is in his 8th season with the Huskies. Assistant coach Patrick Sellers is in his 5th season with the Huskies and director of operations Beau Archibald is in his 2nd season with the Huskies.

The Huskies will continue their participation in the 2008-2009 season with games against the Providence, at Louisville, Michigan, Syracuse, at Seton Hall, Pittsburgh, South Florida, at Marquette, Notre Dame and at Pittsburgh.

Thus far the Huskies have an overall game record of 18 wins and 1 loss. These statistics can be further broken down into 9 wins and 1 loss at home games, 5 wins and no losses at away games and 4 wins in neutral areas.

Adrien appears to be quite the contender for most valuable player on the team this season with point scoring averaging 14.3 and a total of 271 points. A very close competitor, however is Dyson, who has 257 points and is averaging 13.5 points per game. Of course, there are more than a few games left to be played this season, which means numbers can change quickly.

The Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is the location that all home games for both men\’s and women\’s basketball are held. Opened for business in 1990, the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is over 171,000 square feet in the overhead dome and offers 39,000 square feet of space that is attached to the Wolff-Zackin Natorium.

With state of the art facilities, the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion offers modern scoreboards with complete player lineup information that includes fouls, points, and full color game video boards, wood grain professional style individual lockers, an adjoining varsity team lounge and an audio visual area with a large screen television that features satellite dish hook-up for game reviews and scouts.

The Huskies are NCAA participants and follow the rules of the organization regarding agents, amateurism, contact with students and athletes at the school and with high school and junior college coaches and student-athlete employment.

Are you a fan of the Harry Potter movie series? If you said yes, then many of you must be fans of the other characters too.

It is not a new thing that people like the supporting characters too apart the protagonist. And the supporting characters of Harry Potter are really amazing. They have their own forte, powers and skills. And the fans not only like the positive supporting characters, but they also like the characters that are in the opposition of the Hero. Positive or negative whoever you like, but one thing is for sure that all the supporting characters of Harry Potter have their own identity. They play an important role in the plot of the story and this is the reason that people like them too.

In this article, we will discuss about the 5 Hay Potter characters whose actions figures are very popular –

1. Harry Potter – Obviously, this name has to be on the top. With millions as his fans worldwide, the character of this child magician has grown up in the last few years. Till now, the silver screen has witnessed six Harry Potter movies and all of them have been great hits through out the world. And surprisingly not only kids, but adults too watch his movies. Harry James is an orphan who learns that he is a wizard on his eleventh birthday. Then he goes to the ‘Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’ to learn magic. Harry Potter discovers that he is famous in the whole Wizarding world as his fate is tied with that of Lord Voldemort, the Dark wizard who killed the parents of Harry.

The Harry Potter action figure is among the hottest toys today.

2. Hermione Granger – Now, those who know Harry Potter they also know about this character for sure. Hermione is the girlfriend of our little magician. Hermione Jean Granger becomes close friends with Harry Potter and she uses her quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge to help him in situations. She is very clever and intelligent.

Initially, she has a tendency to panic in scary situations, but later she learns to be more instinctive, saving others lives at times with her quick thinking. Today, the Hermione Granger action figures are not much behind the Harry Potter figures in popularity.

3. Dumbledore – Next comes Dumbledore, the full name is ‘Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore’. This character plays an important role in the story of Harry Potter as he is the major protagonist. Dumbledore is the headmaster of the Wizarding Magic School – ‘Hogwarts of Witchcraft and Wizardry’. He is the founder and director of the ‘Order of the Phoenix’, an organization that fights the main antagonist Lord Voldemort.

You can find that the Dumbledore action figures are available in different series as they have released by the toy companies after the release of every Harry Potter movie.

4. Draco Malfoy – All Harry Potter fans much know about this character. Draco is an antagonist the Harry Potter series. He is a Slytherin student studying with Harry. This character is accompanied by Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, two dim-witted accomplices who mostly act as his bodyguards. Draco is often regarded as a cowardly bully that is known for using taunts and psychological manipulation for denigrating his victims. Draco reveals his ability to cunningly wield magic for achieve his objectives.

Draco likes to attack his enemies with psychological warfare. He often sues his elitist upbringing as his weapon to belittle the ones who are less prosperous like Ron Weasley.

The Harry Potter Draco action figures released after every Harry Potter movie resemble the original character. A large number of people collect these action figures and this proves that people like the negative characters too.

5. Hagrid – This cute fat looking character of Rubeus Hagrid is very popular among the Harry Potter fans. The interesting thing is that this character is addressed by his surname only. Hagrid is the keeper of Keys and Grounds. He is also the gamekeeper of the magic school. The character of Hagrid was introduced in the Harry Potter’s third year at the Hogwarts School. Later it is revealed that this character is also a member of the ‘Order of the Phoenix’. After his expulsion from the magic school, the Ministry breaks his oak wand and forbade him of magic. But, he keeps the broken pieces of his wand in an umbrella to perform small spells at times. The character of Hagrid will always be a bit inept because he is not a fully qualified wizard compared to the others. He may loose his major magical tricks, but he is still a hit in the action figure world as there are many different versions of Hagrid action figures available today in the market. .

Spike Lee’s longtime cinematographer, Ernest R. Dickerson, made his directorial debut with this violent story about four Harlem teens whose lives are changed when a store robbery goes wrong. The film has been likened to an urban The Wild Bunch, but it is far too artificial for that. With Dickerson’s eye, Juice understandably looks great, but at the end of the day it is only a slightly better versi…

This strange and charming documentary by Al Pacino, in which he also stars, is an exploration of several topics: Shakespeare and his hump-backed villain, the impulse to act, the way actors work–and Pacino’s single-minded effort to make the Bard accessible to all audiences and not just the effete few. Over the course of the film, Pacino alternately discusses the role and the text; roams Manhattan,…

What would the average sensible American do if he encountered a pulsing ball of protoplasm from outer space? That’s right: he’d poke it with a stick. Thus begins the endearingly earnest and silly tale of The Blob. Young Steve McQueen takes on his first leading role as, um, Steve, a spunky teenager with plenty of heart. Steve sees the blob kill the local doc, but darn it, none of the town’s adults …

Since the passage of the Civil Rights Bill of 1964, only three Democrats have captured the White House -all of them natives of southern states. The ascendancy and reelection of Bill Clinton to the presidency is a prime example of this phenomenon, and although books have been published on the “native son” psychological variable in electoral contests, no work to date has investigated this aspect of …

Christina Applegate never runs out of surprises. As a fixture of the comic show, “Samantha Who?” it does not surprise anyone to see her deliver her comic act right on cue. Recently, however, she delivered one act that caught everyone in shock – she had both of her breasts removed.

Good Morning America reported that Christina Applegate, 36, decided on double mastectomy to ensure that she won’t be bothered by breast cancer again in her lifetime. Although doctors do not totally eliminate the possibility of a recurrence, prophylactic mastectomy reduces the risk by about 95%.

How far would you go to ensure your own survival?

Oncologists described Ms. Applegate’s decision as a “courageous act”, while most women her age and stature may have opted otherwise to receive chemotherapy and radiation. Christina did not have much of an option, as the genetic testing which was performed on her, when she had a lumpectomy, showed a grim picture – BRCA1 positive.

The presence of the genetic mutation, BRCA1, indicates a patient is more likely to develop cancer in her lifetime or have a recurrence, even if earlier efforts to halt cancer proved successful. Apparently, Ms. Applegate would not want to put up a comic act when her life is put on the line. A tough decision, it must have been for her, but she decided to tread the unbeaten path for most celebrities.

But she only had cancer in one breast – did she over-react to treatment?

Unfortunately for Christina, the presence of the BRCA1 gene runs in her family as her mother was also stricken with cancer. Perhaps this family history firmed up Christina’s decision not to think twice about a double mastectomy.

Not everyone would have the courage to make this decision in such a short period of time like Christina did, but one thing is certain, there is more to life than having to worry about a pair of breasts. When forced to choose between keeping them or losing one’s life, most would surely – albeit grudgingly – put up a heroic act like Christina’s.
