A volume swell is a musical crescendo commonly associated with the electric guitar. Crescendo, in standard musical notation, refers to a passage of music during which the volume gradually increases.

The technique is often executed by the little finger of the guitarist which is wrapped around the volume pot/knob of the guitar. When the note is struck the volume is increased from zero by a rolling motion of the little finger. Alternatively, the effect is achieved with a volume pedal, by moving the pedal forward to increase volume and backwards to reduce vilume. It is sometimes called violinning, because the sound is similar to a bowed violin. Allan Holdsworth pioneered the technique of the pedal swelling along with a delay unit to create a thicker sound that’s more associated with chellos.

Guitar players who can do volume swells with the volume knob, often change them to round roller knobs to give your pinkie more traction and accuracy. Personally I use the stock Stratocaster knobs and find them very adequate. That is how I was trained, although it is more popular with younger guitarists to use a volume pedal.

To visualize and actually see an example of how to perform a volume swell, most of the video sites have some great tutorials. Make sure to check them out.

Adding volume swells to your repertoire will take some time in terms of practice and patience. It is considered one of the most beautiful flowing sounds an electric guitar can be manipulated into performing. Take a few minutes out of every practice session to develop your technique. In time, you will become a master and more viable player.

Roy Buchanan was famous for his emotive volume swells, often in combination with note bending and vibrato. Roy really hits my soul, a guitar player worthy of listening to. Jan Akkerman used the technique with Focus and precision.

Another early use of swells is found in the Beatles recording of Eight Days a Week.

To watch a guitarist perform a volume swell is better than a thousand words, again, find a video lesson online for free at most video sites or communities.

Volume swells fall into the same category as pinch harmonics, false harmonics or squealies. No basketball team amounts to much without the necessary guidance from the basketball coaching staff who supports, educates, trains and instructs the team. The Huskies are no exception. Coaching support for the Huskies includes head coach Jim Calhoun who is in his 23rd season with the Huskies. Associate head coach George Blaney is in his 8th season with the Huskies. Assistant coach Andre LaFleur is in his 8th season with the Huskies. Assistant coach Patrick Sellers is in his 5th season with the Huskies and director of operations Beau Archibald is in his 2nd season with the Huskies.

The Huskies will continue their participation in the 2008-2009 season with games against the Providence, at Louisville, Michigan, Syracuse, at Seton Hall, Pittsburgh, South Florida, at Marquette, Notre Dame and at Pittsburgh.

Thus far the Huskies have an overall game record of 18 wins and 1 loss. These statistics can be further broken down into 9 wins and 1 loss at home games, 5 wins and no losses at away games and 4 wins in neutral areas.

Adrien appears to be quite the contender for most valuable player on the team this season with point scoring averaging 14.3 and a total of 271 points. A very close competitor, however is Dyson, who has 257 points and is averaging 13.5 points per game. Of course, there are more than a few games left to be played this season, which means numbers can change quickly.

The Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is the location that all home games for both men\’s and women\’s basketball are held. Opened for business in 1990, the Harry A. The Virginia Cavaliers are no newcomers to success or change. Some of their greatest victories lie behind them as an impetus to push them forward into the 2009 season. Whether it turns into a revival for this fantastic team or not remains to be seen. Located at Whitehead Road and Alderman Road in Charlottesville, Virginia, Scott Stadium hosts all home football games that the Virginia Cavaliers play. Expanded several times to include grass hill seating and upper decks, this year Scott Stadium also received an upgrade of a larger video screen and new scoreboard to give visitors a better view and brighter tally of the game scores. If you follow tradition, then you should know that a visit to Scott Stadium to see the Virginia Cavaliers play means wearing orange if you’re a student and if you want to catch the Virginia Pep Band performing, you’ll have to catch them outside in the parking lot as they perform for the tailgating crowd only.

Scott Stadium is a u-shaped venue that provides an opportunity to get a seat from virtually any preferred location in the stadium to watch the Virginia Cavaliers play. If you like the up close action feel of a football game, you’ll want to take advantage of the 100s section that stretches around three-quarters of the field.

Boxes and club seating are limited but available in the 300s section of the stadium. Those who want to raise the roof and enjoy the elements of an outdoor game as well as keep their budget in tact can choose from a wide variety of seating options in the 500s section.
